Austin Texas portrait photographer, Christopher Ferguson, captured this series of character portraits for hiphop artist King Jayms, at his studio on South Congress.
This was a very quick and particularly fun photo shoot for me. King and I grew up together but hadn’t seen each other in almost a decade so it was a pleasant surprise to hear from him and find he just moved into a neighborhood close to mine. (Even as kids our families always stayed within a few blocks from each other. Always.) This series is intended as promotional photos leading up to his next CD release featuring a very elaborate concept cover shoot we are currently working on. The photos were shot against a door in my studio covered with a maple? wood veneer which was an amazing contrast against his skintone and green Coogi shirt. I used a single, hard light source (beauty dish) to introduce strong shadows and enhance the moodiness and style of the scene. I shot very tight dynamic crops to invoke a sense of being “larger than life” and even though he gave a full range of expressions, I choose the images that were most stoic for the final series. Post-processing was minimal. I added a smidgen more tonal contrast, turned up the vibrancy and injected a cool blue into the shadows to generate a look reminiscent of Kodak Ektachrome supercolor film. Fun Shoot, feedback welcome.
